Conduct radioactive readings prior to the
U.N. arrival.
Beginning in 1966, France conducted more than
200 nuclear weapons tests in the South Pacific on tiny atolls
of the Tuamotu Archipelago in
French
Polynesia until
signing the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. France had planned
a series of eight tests starting in September 1995, but completed
only 6 due to international political pressure. France never
revealed until recently that the final test was unsuccessful.
The weapon did not go critical. The conventional explosives
detonated, but merely scattered the highly enriched uranium
about the
atoll.
The United Nations is sending a team to clean
up the atoll. Your tasking is to proceed to the atoll and collect
radiation readings prior to the arrival of the
U.N.
Plane
that is scheduled to
land
at 0600 local time from Tahiti.
Proceed to the following two positions and
obtain the radiation readings. Due to the northerly winds, the
positions are south of the atoll. You must remain within range
of the designated point for a minimum of three minutes in order
to obtain accurate readings. The site 1 reading must be made
first:
16-10 S / 146-23 W
16-11 S / 146-21 W
But the U.N. inspection team is
not
the only visitor
to the island…
