IMPROVED
AKULA-I (Project 971U)
Russia’s counterpart
to the U.S. Los Angeles Class, the Improved Akula-I Class submarine
is nearly as quiet as the 688(I). With six additional tubes
external to the pressure hull, it is capable of carrying additional
weapons or decoys.
Displacement:
9,830 tons surf./12,390 tons sub.
Speed: 10 kts surf./33-35 kts sub.
Dimensions: 114.30 x 13.60 (15.4
over stabilizers) x 9.68
TPK: 7
Crew: 20 officers, 30 enlisted
ARMAMENT:
4 bow 650-mm TT (Type 86R and 88R/SS-N-16 Stallion missiles
and/or Type 65-76 or UGST torpedoes); 4 bow 533-mm TT (Type
83R and 84R/SS-N-15 Starfish and RPK-55 Granat/SS-N-21 Sampson
missiles; USET-80 torpedoes; mines); 6 533-mm external bow tubes;
1 shoulder-launched SAM syst. (18 Strela-2M or Igla-M missiles).
(See Gameplay Note below.)
ELECTRONICS:
Radar: 1 MRK-50 Albatros’-series
(Snoop Pair) nav./search
Sonar: MGK-540 Skat-3 (Shark Gill)
suite: MGK-503 LF active/passive; passive flank array; MG-519
HF active mine avoidance; large-aperture towed passive LF linear
hydrophone array
EW: Amber Light intercept; Rim
Hat intercept; Park Lamp D/F;
MOTOR:
1 OK-650B pressurized-water nuclear reactor (190 Mw), steam
turbines; 1/7-bladed prop; 47,600 shp; 2/dc electric low-speed
motors; 820 shp for 3-4 kts
DEPTH:
Maximum operating depth is 520 m (1,706 ft), with normal operating
depth of 400-450 m (1,312-1,476 ft) and crush depth reported
as 900 m (2.953 ft).
AKULA-II
CLASS
Quieter than the Akula
I, Improved the Akula II is the quietest nuclear powered Russian
submarine in existence. At low speed is reported to be as quiet
or quieter than the United States Improved Los Angeles class
submarine. Also armed with six additional external tubes for
weapons or countermeasures, the Akula-II is a formidable opponent
